I am requesting funding to replace our existing sewing machines. I would like to purchase quality mechanical sewing machines which is intended for student use which, with proper use, storage and annual servicing, should have a lifespan of 7-10 years.
The machines I would like to order are the Janome Schoolmate S-3015. Currently, the machines are $529 each. The request for $9500 would cover the cost of 17 new machines and extra funds to cover any shipping surcharge.
Our current sewing machines were purchased before 2014 (I’m unsure of the purchase date, was before I started teaching in HPS) and have become unreliable despite being professionally serviced annually.
The students get to engage in many projects and learning activities in terms of machine sewing. Some simple projects include but are not limited to: scrunchies, zipper pouches, heating pads, soup bowl cozies. After mastering some construction basics, we then expand to garment projects including but not limited to: pajama pants, dresses, cargo pants, shirts, etc. The students very much enjoy learning how to make things they can use for themselves, gift to a loved one and figure out how some of their favorite clothing is made. Some of this enjoyment gets diminished when their sewing machine doesn’t work properly and we have to spend a significant amount of time trouble sheeting, constantly rethreading bobbins and the machines.

There is full enrollment in the HHS Exploring Fashion I classes with some students returning to take Exploring Fashion 2. We have fortunately been able to exceed our course enrollment to include 17 students for each section. It is estimated that in a 7-10 years time frame, our class sewing machines will be used by approximately 238-340 students.
