Grant Description:
In connection with this year’s One Book, One School program at HMS, we held a very successful World Cultures Night. The One Book, One School read for 2022 was Count Me In by Varsha Bajaj – a compelling story about standing up for what is right, social change, and activism. This contemporary novel tells the story of an Indian-American seventh-grader who sees the effects of a racist incident in her life and realizes she can’t just passively stand by. By using her own gifts and talents, she works to help her community (and the reader) to understand our world is better when we embrace diversity and stand united. This book provided the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate the diversity of Hingham through World Cultures Night.
The evening featured contributions from eleven groups of Hingham families, showcasing connections to the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, China, Hungary, France, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, and Israel. In addition, we featured displays from HMS students hailing from Brazil and China. Students from HHS also participated – the HHS Chinese Club offered a calligraphy demonstration, the Spanish Club provided an arts and crafts table, and POCA (People of Color and Allies) spread information about their work in the community.
Building on the success of this year, we would like to make World Cultures Night an annual event. While the connection with the One Book, One School project might not be possible next year, the event connects perfectly with the study of world cultures that students are taking part in during their World Language classes.
We are requesting $1,000 to fund this event, including the purchase of imitation passport stamps and books ($100), paper goods for serving food ($200), custodial fees ($300) and food ($400).
