Grant Description:
The South School kindergarten team is requesting funding for class sets of headphones. We are looking for a set of 25 headphones for each of the four kindergarten classrooms. We need durable headphones that each child can use throughout the school year. We are happy to highlight the impact of this grant through sharing student work and examples of learning from our classrooms.
How much funding are you seeking?
$2,500
Would partial funding of this grant be possible?
Yes
Is there any other information you would like to provide HEF in consideration for this grant?
We take the universal design approach to learning, offering flexibility in the way students access material and show what they know. The use of headphones impacts the classroom learning environment and student success. It gives students the opportunity to fully focus on their task and allows small groups to run smoothly. A thoughtful rollout will include lessons on how to correctly use and store headphones. We will teach and reinforce how to take care of the headphones and why they are important to our learning. The use of headphones is an important piece of the MTSS model for literacy and math. We use headphones for iReady lessons and assessments, Lexia, and various educational apps.
A class set of headphones is important for many reasons. The kindergarten team follows the same schedule, so while we collaborate and share many materials, we are unable to share headphones if centers are running at the same time. Student’s will take responsibility for their headphones, keeping them clean and storing them properly. Kindergarten is the foundational building block of students’ elementary experience. If we teach students how to use headphones now we are setting them up for success in future grades at South and beyond.
Ownership of their headphones will help foster independence as they must demonstrate responsibility to care for materials. It also helps build respect for the classroom environment and other students’ learning. Students can lead by example, modeling expected behavior for using their headphones in small groups as well as taking care to store them properly.
